Same-sex marriage registration has been officially launched in Taiwan since May 24th, 2019, which make Taiwan the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage. From January 19th, 2023, residents of those not recognize same-sex marriage countries, Hong Kong, and Macau can also apply for same-sex marriage registration in Taiwan, that further marriage equality. As of April 30th, 2023, nearly four years since its implementation, there were 10,627 couples who completed same-sex marriage registration in Taiwan, including 589 international (inter-regional) marriages.
Among the foreign nationals who have registered same-sex marriages with citizens of our country, the top six countries (regions) are as follows: the United States with 177 individuals (30.1%), Hong Kong region with 68 individuals (11.5%), Canada with 49 individuals (8.3%), the United Kingdom with 42 individuals (7.1%), France with 37 individuals (6.3%), and Australia with 36 individuals (6.1%).The others are 180 individuals (30.6%).
Note: The statistics in this table refer to cases that one party holds Taiwanese citizenship (current household registration) while the other party is a foreign national or a resident of Hong Kong or Macau.
