Changes in the Top 10 Visitor-Generating Countries (Regions) before and after the COVID-19 Pandemic

In 2019, the number of foreign visitors coming to Taiwan reached the highest level in recent years. The top 4 countries /regions are Mainland China (2.68 million visitors), Japan (2.16 million visitors), Hong Kong and Macau (1.64 million visitors), and South Korea (1.25 million visitors.)  All had exceeded 1 million. The fifth place is the United States with 620,000 visitors, and the sixth to tenth places are Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in Southeast Asia.

During the global COVID-19 epidemic from 2020 to 2022, the number of visitors dropped sharply; however, with the lifting of disease control at borders, at the end of 2022, the number of visitors began to steadily rebound in 2023. The top 10 visitor-generating countries /regions, from January to July, were Hong Kong and Macau (550,000 visitors), Japan (390,000 visitors), South Korea (360,000 visitors), the United States (280,000 visitors), Malaysia (230,000 visitors), Vietnam (230,000 visitors), Thailand (220,000 visitors), Singapore (200,000 visitors), the Philippines (190,000 visitors) and Indonesia (110,000 visitors).
