Five-step Precaution Measures when Opening and Closing Vehicles’ Doors - Protecting the Safety of Pedestrians and Vehicles
Over the last 5 years, the number of accidents caused by the sudden opening of car doors averaged 3,285 per year, resulting in 3,792 casualties. In order to effectively minimize accidents, Article 56-1 of the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act was promulgated on November 16, 2016, which stipulates the penal provisions for drivers or passengers improperly opening or closing a car door when making a stop or while parking. Enacted on July 1, 2017, related accidents and casualties in 2017 were respectively reduced to 2,607 and 2,987.
When opening or closing the Vehicles’ doors, drivers and passengers should observe the 5-step precaution measures including look at the side view mirrors, turn around and look behind you, make sure that no pedestrians or vehicles are in sight, open the door to adequate angle with your backhand, make sure it is safe, exit the car quickly, and close the door. If we can all just be more considerate of others, pedestrian and driving safety will be assured significantly.
