During the Ministry of the Interior’s (MOI) ministerial affairs meeting held today (18th), the National Immigration Agency (NIA) presented plans for the next phase of the " New Immigrants Basic Law." Interior Minister Liu Shyh-Fang announced the creation of the " Preparatory Office for the Protection of the Rights of New Immigrants," a dedicated body to champion the rights and welfare of new immigrants. The NIA has been tasked with swiftly organizing and coordinating with relevant bodies to establish the functions and staffing of this new office, ensuring comprehensive care and support for new immigrants.

According to Minister Liu, once the new law is passed, it will expand the applicable scope of new immigrants to include not only immigrants by marriage but also professional and technical immigrants. This will be followed by a comprehensive review and revision of related regulations and measures, gradually creating a more diverse and friendlier environment. To effectively leverage the power of civil society and utilize resources efficiently, the level and functions of the Executive Yuan's Coordination Meeting on Immigration Affairs will be adjusted accordingly. Additionally, the management and utilization of the New Immigrant Development Fund will undergo reform, including the participation of new immigrants or their offspring as representatives. New immigrants will also be encouraged to actively engage in public participation, enhancing multicultural exchange and engagement.

Minister Liu emphasized that the MOI will continue to integrate the efforts of central ministries, local governments, and civil society to finetune policies related to new immigrants, aiming to foster a more diverse, harmonious, and friendly society for new immigrants.
