The Automated Immigration Clearance System, e-Gate, was established by the National Immigration Agency (NIA) of the Ministry of the Interior in 2011. Each year from 2016 to 2019, over one million people have already enrolled. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of applications for this program dropped dramatically. However, in 2022, the border restrictions of Taiwan were lifted after the tension of pandemic has gradually released around the world, leading to a total number of 257,123 travelers enrolled in e-Gate system. By contrast, in 2021, only 15,765 travelers enrolled.
November 1, 2022, the NIA introduced self-enrollment for e-Gate. Taiwan passport or Taiwan Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) holders over the age of 12 can enroll in the e-Gate while completing the automated immigration clearance process together at once; by using kiosks which are located in airports and seaports in Taiwan, which is not only timing-saving, but also convenient for travelers.
