At the end of each year, a large number of fishing vessels conducting saury fishery in the North Pacific Ocean return to Taiwan for replenishment. Saury fishery not only provides large employment opportunities for domestic and foreign labors, but also plays an important role in Taiwan’s fishing industry.

Over the past two years, in collaboration with the Fisheries Agency, the National Immigration Agency (NIA) increased the staffing in Kaohsiung Port in preparation for the return of a large number of saury fishing vessels. The statistics show the entering number of vessels and crew members were 89 and 4,380 respectively between November 2, 2020 and January 1, 2021, and 96 and 4,806 respectively between November 10, 2021 and December 27, 2021. Furthermore, to enhance the health security of nationals, the NIA also collaborated with public and private sectors to promote awareness of African swine fever/COVID-19 to foreign crew members and encouraged them to get vaccinated.
