TSMC 3 Nanometer Baoshan Plant Passes the Urban Planning Review
On July 16, the Urban Planning Commission of the Ministry of the Interior approved the TSMC 3 Nanometer Baoshan Plant Urban Planning/Rezoning Case for TSMC to invest over NT$600 billion to construct the 3 Nanometer Baoshan Plant. The construction will commence in 2020, the plant is slated for mass production after the end of 2022, and the decision has significantly boosted progress in the area.
The Ministry of the Interior pointed out that in response to the government's active promotion of the "5+2" (Asia Silicon Valley, green energy technology, biomedical industry, smart machines, national defense airlines, new agriculture, and high-value materials circular economy) industrial innovation policy, the Ministry of Science and Technology has provided assistance in solving the five insufficiency problems of the industry by screening the available lands around the Hsinchu Science Park and assessing the suitable lands for industrial development in hopes of realizing the overall industrial cluster benefits. On September 13, 2018, the Executive Yuan approved the expansion plan and rezoned approximately 29.5 hectares of the protected areas for science park use.
The Ministry of the Interior indicated that to boost the economy, the government will provide certain assistance in terms of the lands needed for overseas manufacturers to return and invest in Taiwan. The Urban Planning Commission of the Ministry of the Interior's review and approval of the TSMC Baoshan Plant Urban Planning/Rezoning Case proposed by the Ministry of Science and Technology will move the TSMC 3 Nanometer Baoshan Plant Investment Construction Plan forward, ensure Taiwan's leading edge for its world-leading processes, and inject momentum to domestic investments.
