The Ministry of the Interior held the “Expert of Document Examination Competition” Service Units at Taoyuan International Airports strove for the award
The Ministry of the Interior held the “Expert of Document Examination Competition” on December 25, 2018 to fortify the security management of national borders and improvement of the capacity of immigration officers in the authentication of identification documents. Gurus from Taipei Songshan Airport, Taoyuan International Airport, Taichung International Airport, and Kaohsiung International Airport gathered at Taoyuan International Airport to strive for the title of “Expert of Document Examination”. Some immigration officers even dressed in the costume of Santa Claus and distributed gifts and candies to the travelers so that they could feel the atmosphere of Christmas Day.

The immigration officers must keep a proper balance of security, service, and efficiency in performing their duties. No one could imagine the difficulty and the hardship without being put into their positions. This competition attracted more than 20 immigration officers who are gurus in authentication of ID documents participating in the contest of the “professional group”. Service partners at Taoyuan International Airports, including China Airlines, EVA Airlines, Tasa Meng Group, Ever Rich, Liang Fu Security Services, and Chi Chia Security Services齊家保全 were also invited to send representatives to the “amateur group” of the contest in order to let the public understand the work of the immigration officers better. The organizer of the competition designed genuine and faked passports and circulated among the contestants to sort out the faked passports. Contests who could successfully sort out the fake ones in the shortest time were the winners. The ground staff of the airline companies, the service personnel of the duty free shops, and the security personnel used what they had just learned from the entry level course of passport authentication in a “quick fix” to challenge the other contestants in the competition. The representatives responded to the quiz in a number of interesting means including shaking the hula hoop, double holding of ball, or bouncing and tossing the ball so as to get highest score for the champion.

The government of Taiwan has spared no effort in promoting tourism in Taiwan and diversifying the sources of origin of tourists that resulted in a surge of traffic volume of inbound and outbound travelers, according to Director Chung Ching-Kun of the National Immigration Agency (NIA). The Border Affairs Corps constituted the first line of defense of national security and has to provide good quality service in handling the voluminous flow of travelers. The NIA has held an international conference on national border management in 2018, and formed an “International League” with different countries in order to develop certain security mechanisms. The “Service League” also has its presence at Taoyuan International Airport. In 2018, Skytrax won the championship of the best ID authentication service at airport. This shows that Taiwan is at the world-class in border security and service.

We have organized a competition of this kind for 9 years since 2009. This event helps to advocate and motivate the junior immigration officers to learn through this competition at the end of the year. It also serves to validate the result of training and improve the professional capacity of the immigration officers in the authentication of ID documents, which will eventually contribute to the defense capacity of screening of faked documents along the border line to assure homeland security.
