Interior Ministry to hold forums on wetland conservation & science
“Symbiotic Ark 2.0: Taiwan Wetland Research Camp,” a program co-organized by the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA), and the Council of Agriculture (COA) will hold three forums featuring wetland conservation and science in northern, central and southern Taiwan from this October. The forums will invite experts and scholars from Ramsar Convention, Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS), and World Wildlife Fund Hong Kong (WWF-HK) to discuss issues encompassing wetland environment education and talent incubation, biodiversity of wetlands, and infrastructure of wetland ecology and renewable energy.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Taiwan Wetland Research Camp is the result of the 2016 International Wetland Convention in Taiwan. Co-organized by the Construction and Planning Agency of the Ministry of the Interior, the MOEA’s Water Resource Agency, the EPA of the Executive Yuan, and the Forestry Bureau of COA, the convention, which titled “Wetlands: Our Common Wealth,” explored the situation of wetlands under climate change and land conservation. During the convention, the Construction and Planning Agency signed the Memorandum of Agreement for 2016-2011 Regional Strategic Program of Action (RSPA) with SWS and WWF-HK to expand international collaborations in global wetland conservation, increase international exposure, and strengthen international cooperation.

The Ministry pointed out that this year marks the beginning of the collaboration, and to enhance domestic colleges’ knowledge, techniques, and horizon of wetlands, it will invite international organizations that signed the MoA and representatives from related organizations of Ramsar Convention as well as experts and scholars for talent incubation and techniques exchange. The Wetland Conservation and Science Forum will be held in northern, central and southern Taiwan from the middle of this October to deepen cultivation of wetland professionals, prompt interdisciplinary exchanges, and build an important foundation for international collaborative wetland projects in the future.

The three forums, which includes “Wetlands Environment Education and Talent Incubation,” “Wetland Biodiversity,” and “Infrastructure of Wetland Ecology and Renewable Energy,” will be held at the National Taiwan Normal University, the National Chung Hsing University, and the National Cheng Kung University respectively on Oct. 16, Oct. 18, and Oct. 20.
